Social media keeps us all connected in ways that the world could never have anticipated before. But for all the positives of connectivity, there are, of course, plenty of downsides. Recent news about a Tumblr data breach reminds us just how vulnerable we are.
An article on BBC.co.uk, MySpace and Tumblr hit by ‘mega breach’, reveals that hundreds of millions of hacked account details from both Tumblr and MySpace have been advertised for sale online.
In both cases, the logins appear to have been stolen several years ago but only recently came to light. The incident comes the same month it emerged that a four-year-old database containing more than 167 million LinkedIn IDs had been traded online. One expert said it was “intriguing” all had emerged in such a short period.
Between Tumblr and MySpace, you might think that the Tumblr breach is the most impactful, since MySpace isn’t really used all that much by the general population.
However, experts say the MySpace breach is more troubling. That network’s stolen list includes details for 360.2 million accounts, including email addresses and up to two linked passwords.
Sure, some of this data is a few years old, but that doesn’t mean that users aren’t at risk. A majority of social network users don’t follow good password practices, meaning they don’t change their login information regularly.
This reminds us that in our personal and professional lives, it’s absolutely imperative that we stay on top of all of the suggested tactics to protect our data.
This is especially true for business owners, whose company data is particularly sensitive. If you employ mobile workers (and have established a Bring Your Own Device environment), you need to make sure you’re doing all you can to protect the data of your company and its customers.
