There are entire segments of the population that have little to no idea what BlackBerry is, let alone that the company helped bring the smartphone into existence. And now that it appears that the relationship between BlackBerry 10 and Facebook is over (by the end of 2016) more rumors about the company’s future are sure to pop up.

An article on ibtimes.com, Facebook ditching BlackBerry 10 and BBOS support by the end of 2016, discusses how not only is Facebook going to sever ties with BlackBerry 10, but so will its WhatApp service:

“We are extremely disappointed in their decision as we know so many users love these apps,” Blackberry noted in a response on its blog. “We fought back to work with WhatsApp and Facebook to change their minds, but at this time, their decision stands.”

Interestingly, BlackBerry has taken this opportunity to create a trending campaign, #ILoveBB10Apps, which has gained momentum across BlackBerry’s main audience: business-centric folks.

When WhatsApp first announced its departure from BlackBerry 10 (in February), it was pretty clear on why it was ceasing its support. It noted that these devices simply don’t offer the capabilities that are necessary to expand the app’s features into the future.

Ouch. This tiff between BlackBerry 10 and Facebook will surely hurt the phone company’s popularity, but it’s not like BB users won’t be able to waste time on Facebook after 2016. They simply will have to use their web browsers to access Facebook … you know, the way it used to be before apps became the tech-du-jour.
